Advertising Standards
Effective date: October 27, 2026
Household Referral Magazine and The Opportunity Magazine are published by Household Media LLC. Readers keep our magazines because they trust them, so every ad must meet these standards. They apply to print ads, website listings, directory entries and sponsored content. We may refuse, edit or remove any ad that does not meet them.
Standards for every advertiser
- Be truthful. Claims must be accurate and not misleading. Advertisers must be able to back up any claim about results, savings, ratings or awards.
- Be licensed. Advertisers must hold every license, registration and insurance their business requires, and keep it current.
- Use real reviews only. Testimonials and reviews must come from real customers, with their permission, and reflect their honest experience.
- Clear pricing. Advertised prices and offers must include any important conditions, such as expiration dates or limits.
- No discrimination. Ads may not discriminate based on race, color, religion, sex, disability, familial status, national origin or any other protected class.
- Use your own content. Advertisers must own or have permission to use every logo, photo and piece of text in their ad.
- Real contact information. Ads must identify the business by name and include a working way to reach it.
Rules by category
| Category | Required in the ad |
|---|---|
| Contractors (roofing, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, general contracting) | Florida contractor license number, where state law requires it |
| Real estate agents | Name of the agent’s brokerage, and compliance with fair housing rules |
| Mortgage professionals | NMLS ID number |
| Insurance agents | Licensed in Florida; ads follow state insurance advertising rules |
| All home services | Any offer terms, such as “free estimate” conditions |
Tracked numbers and pay-per-call
Ads may include a tracked phone number and QR code provided by us. Calls may be recorded, with a recording notice, so we can report results and verify billable calls. Advertisers on pay-per-call plans agree to the billing terms in their advertising agreement.
Website pixel, audience data and leads
Advertisers who use our website pixel, Intent Data Insights or leads agree to these rules. Breaking them can end your account without refund.
- Disclose the pixel. If you install our pixel, your website’s privacy policy must say you use visitor identification technology and share visitor data with marketing partners. Keep it in place for as long as the pixel runs.
- Mail and ads only. Names and addresses from Intent Data Insights or visitor identification may be used only for direct mail and online ads. Do not call, text or email these households from that data.
- Calls and texts need consent. Call or text only people who asked to hear from you, such as leads who submitted a quote request with consent, or callers who reached you through your ad. Honor every stop or do-not-call request right away, and scrub against the National Do Not Call Registry and Florida’s list as the law requires.
- No sensitive targeting. Do not use our data to target or exclude people by race, religion, national origin, sex, disability, family status, age or health condition, or to make decisions about credit, insurance, housing or employment.
- Do not resell or share our data with anyone else.
- Honor opt-outs. If we tell you a household has opted out, remove it from your lists within 10 days.
- No fake reviews or people. Ads, including AI-generated video, may not show made-up customers, testimonials or endorsements, or imply a real person endorses you when they don’t.
Extra rules for The Opportunity Magazine
Ads for franchises, businesses for sale and work-from-home opportunities involve people’s savings, so these rules apply on top of the standards above.
Franchises
- The franchisor must comply with the FTC Franchise Rule and provide a Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD) to prospective buyers as the law requires.
- Ads may not state or suggest how much an owner will earn, unless the figure appears in Item 19 of the franchisor’s current FDD and the ad says so.
- Investment ranges in ads must match the current FDD.
Business opportunities and businesses for sale
- Sellers of business opportunities must comply with the FTC Business Opportunity Rule and be registered under Florida’s Sale of Business Opportunities Act, or confirm in writing that they are exempt.
- Businesses listed for sale must be real and available, and asking prices must be accurate. Listings from business brokers must name the brokerage.
Work-from-home and online businesses
- No guaranteed or “typical” income claims, and no promises of easy, fast or passive income.
- No “done-for-you” or “automated” store offers that promise profits.
- The ad or its landing page must state the total cost to get started, including required training, tools or inventory.
- Advertisers must provide a business address and a written refund policy.
- No pyramid schemes, and no programs where income comes mainly from recruiting others.
We may ask any Opportunity Magazine advertiser for its FDD, registration, license or proof of claims before accepting an ad.
How ads are labeled
Paid listings and sponsored content are labeled as advertising, such as “Advertisement,” “Paid listing” or “Sponsored.” News and guide articles are written independently of advertisers.
